Orientation

Once upon a time, there was a fisherman who
lived with his wife and soon in a village near the mouth of the batang
arau river in west sumatra. They made their living by fishing, and
their were very poor. Their only son, whose name malin kundang, was a a
spoiled son. His family loved him so much, an it made lazy, selfish,
and naughty. He even became a burden to his parents.
Malin kundang was no longer a small boy when a
merchant ship came and dropped anchor at the delta of batang arau. The
captain of the ship was looking for the new crew. Malin kundang’s father
wanted his son to have experience to help him get through life, so he asked
his son whether he would like to become a sailor. Malin kudang liked the idea
because he would be able to go and see faraway places. “that would be
exciting” he thought.

Complication
|
Years passed, but no news over came from malin
kundang. His father died and ihs mother onw lived by herself. She was a then
poor and lonely old woman who wanted nothing more in the world than to
hear from her only son before she died.
Malin kundang was very succesful at sea. Not
only nwas he now the captain of ship, but also he was the owner of a fleet of
merchant ships as well. He had become a very rich man.
One day, malin kundang’s large ship was sailing
near the batang arau. It so happened that the ship needed fresh water and
bought supplies, so malin kundang ordered the ship’s crew to drop anchor it
batang arau harbour.
When an old man, friend of malin kundang’s
mother came to tell her that her son had returned, she could hardly believe
the news. But she quickly fetched a bowl, filled it with a dish of fish and
rice which her son liked very much, and felt the house with the old man. She
was very excited and happy.
But what happened at the harbour really broke her
heart. Malin kundang refused to admit that she was his mother. “may be he
didn’t recognize me,” the woman said, leaving the ship. “i’ll come back
tomorow.”
The next day she came again, bringing the thing
he son liked very much as a boy. But again malin kundang refused to see her.
The poor mother was still patient with her son’s behaviour and forgave him
again.
But when she tried to meet him for the third
time, her patience really turned to anger after malin kundang had shouted at
her, “what the tell do you want from me, old woman? I am not your son, i
don’t bknow you! Go away, you, bad woman!”

Resolution
|
The poor woman then lifted her hands, and with
eyes closed the said, “oh, god, i know he is my son. But why has he turned so
wicked? Please god don’t lety this wickedness continue. Punis him as you wish
!”
The next day malin kundang left the batang arau
delta. The sky was clear and the wind was blowing peace fully. But as soon as
the ship was in the open sea, the skies suddenly turned dark, and storms came
with a terrible forced. Malin kundang was terrified and cried, “mother,
forgive me. I have done wrong. oh, god! I realized what a deadly sin i have
commited againts my mother. Please, forgive me!” but this time there was no
forgiveness. The ship capsized and turned into a graet rock.
